Welcome to all the viewers Many of you have asked me for a kitchen tour and tips. So I will be showing around my kitchen and what I like about certain aspects. Especially for those setting up a new kitchen, this would be helpful to see what essential and basic items you need. First you have the spice rack. I am having a 6 unit spice rack. My first unit is Sesame seeds and Urud Dal mix which we Saute in most of the preparations with oil first. Next I have Vendayam (Fenugreek Seeds) which is good for digestion and can be added to gravies. Next I have pepper & cumin seeds which we use for Rasam etc. Cumin seeds are also good for digestion Next I have fennel seeds (saunf) and poppy seeds (kus kus). We grind these 2 with coconut to thicken gravies. You get these spice racks as 6,12 and more also. I am comfortable with 6 and these are my top used spices . They make the kitchen look elegant. So you can choose based on the number of frequently used spices 6 or 12 Many people have a open spice divider box called “Anjarai Petti”. But I feel spices might spill or mix. You won’t need all the spices most of the times in a single box. For me this is better and handling is easier. This has 2 openings one for larger quantity to measure in spoon or just to sprinkle directly. So it won’t spill. So even if this small jar falls down, it won’t make a big spill and so it’s safer as well. You can wash these glass jars in dish washer top rack. Or else you can soak in soapy solution and wash with hands easily. Use a fairy or any dish washing liquid and soak for a few hours. Wash and dry before use. Let me show you how I am storing the grocery items. As you can see I have open shelves. So I have kept my groceries in visible airtight containers. I can easily open & close these jars without much effort This is a good quality & standard plastic safe for food products. You should use such food friendly containers. If you prefer stainless steel containers, see if you can get with a small glass side so the contents are visible without opening. On the top I have rice. I use 2 types of rice. One for normal use and basmati rice for special cooking. I use Sona Masoori Rice or Ponni rice for daily use rather than basmati rice. Next I have my dals (lentils). Masoor Dal, Urud Dal, Chana Dal, Moong Dal So all my rice and dal are in one shelf. Next I have my frequently used items which are accessed more frequently than my rice and lentils. First Shreddies (breakfast cereal), Quinoa, Wheat Flour, Then I have horse gram (Kulith), Chick peas, below that I have Almonds (badam) and Rava (Sooji) Then I have these pepper and salt grinders which come in their own bottle for grinding fresh pepper and rock salt Or you can use these glass shakers which you can keep on dining table for guests to use and will look nice. We have discussed and shown about spice jars and grocery items in the kitchen so far. Apart from the Lentils & Spices, we have spice powders which are essential in indian cooking in the next rack We have Chilli Powder, Corriander Powder, Turmeric Powder and Madras curry powder (a combination of 18 spices which you get in Indian grocery shops). Then I have Pepper Powder, Tandoori Powder. These are my commonly used masala powders easily accessible. I have also placed a small spoon inside all of them so that we don’t have to handle with wet hands or use a spoon which could be wet. As we discussed I don’t fancy using small compartment open box (Anjarai Petti) also for the quantity perspective These containers can hold about 1/2 kg . So you don’t need to worry about open packets and frequent refills These jars will last for more than 2 weeks even if you use good quantity of coriander powder daily Behind this, I have the flours. Rice floor, Besan Flour and All purpose flour (Maida). Then roasted channa dal. Then I have the dry masala spices. Bay leaves, cinnamon and cloves. I keep them together as they are mostly used together and used as a blend. Cardomoms, I keep it separate as it is small & has a distinct aroma which I use for tea as well frequently Finally I have the dry red chillies. These are my main items & it’s useful in a open spice rack for quick access When you have an open spice rack like this, the different colors and textures of these items act like a decor and you don’t need separate decoration for your kitchen. Here I have the tea, coffee, sugar and cocoa powder. All the items used for tea & coffee. Behind this I have long boxes in which I store pasta items. I keep the salt in the super market container which looks neat. While cooking sometimes i take it in a small bowl. Here I have my glasses and gravy bowl. In the bottom space I have my Grinder and Mixie (food processor). I put it on my table top when I need it. I have a kitchen trolley which I use for Onions and Potatoes as it needs to be kept in open space without moisture There is a small top rack where I keep some of my knives you would have seen in my cooking videos These knives come with a cover which is useful when you keep it in shelves to take them out safely. Also they are very colorful and sturdy. Each knife is for a different purpose. I like to keep flowers in the kitchen to enhance the mood. And I like real flowers than artificial flowers. Every season I change them. Today I have this. This will be good for a couple of weeks and create a good mood. I keep some towels handy. I have 3 towels in contrast colors. 2 Folded and 1 hanging on the oven handle. This is my table top. I will give an idea of how to use this space. In the corner I have the microwave, lemon squeezer, green plant and a fruit bowl. My kitchen is a relatively small kitchen and by keeping everything in the right place I get enough space to cook. I don’t like to keep everything closed in metal containers and need a good display of everything i need. I keep the chopping board on the table top leaning to the wall and non stick spatulas in a small holder. In UK, you can get this in Wilkinson. In this holder, you have a water collector at the bottom and you can keep washed spatulas in this and later empty the drained water. I got this in tesco. To recap, we are doing a kitchen tips and ideas video. I am basically showing how to keep the kitchen elegant and what are the essential items for an Indian kitchen. So the more colorful items you have like knives, spatulas it will be useful. I get odd shaped plates and bowls when I see them just to make the kitchen interesting. Like this triple bowl plate for snacks on the coffee table. An yellow lemon squeezer with the ability to pour after squeezing, matching color to lemons. A milk cup to pour milk while cooking and water jug for adding water while cooking. Most of my items are not branded. I just collect them when i see them and these are items I have bought in different places if I find it attractive. Most of these items will last a long time. So select a good liking item the first time. Near my stove, I have a metal coaster like this to transfer hot pans and vessels from the stove. I think this is from Ikea. I keep this Kitchen Roll in a Kitchen Roll holder and it’s very handy to wipe hands or any wet plates or utensils. If you have a gas fire stove top, place the kitchen towel away from the stove top. Near the kitchen sink i have some space where I have kept a Plate holder and drainer to arrange my plates. This is for big plates and here i keep my small plates. Near that I keep my cups of different shapes and different colors. Even my bowls, I have in white and black and stack it adjacently for contrasting colors. Different shapes of bowls to match the different plates and combinations. Serving colorful food on white plates will make it beautiful My electric cooker and toaster. I have some extra space here and to use it I have kept some plants and decorative items. This is a natural plant , but this grass is an artificial plant. For flowering plants i prefer natural plants. But this grass like plant is artificial and its everlasting and I have kept it in a contrasting white vase. Behind the tap I have my dish washing items in matching color with a hand wash. Different brushes for different purposes This is a compost caddy. We put our vegetable skins and food waste into this and is recycled separately. Here I have a drainer set. Which has a removable bottom plate which collects water and can be drained away. In this cup board, I store my oils. I use different oils. Olive Oil, Sun Flower Oil, Sesame Seeds Oil, Rap Seed Oil and Coconut Oil. I don’t pour in large containers as oil could get sticky while transferring and pouring. So I just use the 1 ltr or 2 ltr bottles and put it into a small bowl during cooking process. Top shelf of my shelve unit I have cutlery sets. Big spoons on one , Small spoons on another, Fork , Butter knives and main spatulas. Scissor and knives here. Brushes for applying butter or oil. Again colorful – red and yellow. Small tong to hold hot foods, Scraper to peel skin of vegetables and a can opener. All in separate sections useful to access. Next shelf is mixed units. Spatulas ,Tea strainers etc. Plastic items, Cookie Cutter etc. Some of them I use rarely. Egg slicer to slice boiled eggs. Crab Shell breaker. Strawberry deseeder. Small misc items. Microwave egg poacher, Salad spoons, Measuring cups. Colorful clips to seal open packets like these . Will make the packets air tight again. You get this in Ikea and many other shops and is very helpful to easily close open packets In the next rack I have glass bowls, Oven gloves and mainly storage boxes to store food. You would have seen I cook in bulk and several items at times. So I freeze the food in these and these are freezer safe and dish washer and microwave safe. In this cup board, I have unopened or remaining grocery packets for backup and refill when needed. I don’t keep a lot of opened stuff in stainless steel boxes. Just 1 kg and 2 kg packets so its easier for me to store. Sometimes some of these items are not used in daily cooking and are cooked as a whole. So I keep them as it is. This ground almonds for e.g. I have used to make Almond Burfi I have shown a tour of my kitchen and what I have bought and what I use. You can take tips from this. You can decide based on your lifestyle, situation and family, as to what suits you. But overall, have colorful items, less items and interesting items.
