Only responsibly produced, certified seafood at IKEA

Today, IKEA has announced that all 23 species
of fish and seafood we serve in nearly 400 stores around the world will be from
certified sustainable sources. This will make us
one of the largest sellers of responsible seafood in the world, with 23 different species
that will be responsibly certified by the Marine Stewardship Council
or the Aquaculture Stewardship Council. And this is just another
exciting step along the way as we transform our food business
into healthy and sustainable food. We are so excited about it,
because IKEA takes a leadership position in helping customers
make a responsible choice. This brings an incentive
for more salmon producers and other farmers
to meet ASC standards and reduce their impact
on the environment, but also to take good care of the people
who work on the farm and live around it. That’s what it’s about. It’s about reducing impact, but also having
affordable, good food to eat. This will inspire lots of businesses
in the seafood supply chain to look at their own sourcing. Ultimately, their sourcing
will come from sustainable fisheries. It’s important that big companies
like IKEA take this responsibility. They are a global company and they have a potentially
major and increased impact on local resources wherever they are. By making this commitment,
IKEA is saying, “Worldwide,
we will make sure that we are responsible
for serving sustainable seafood.” At IKEA, we have
a “People and Planet Positive” strategy. We want to have
a positive global impact. We want to help people
live more sustainably. We want to be
energy and resource independent, so we are investing in wind farms. And we will take a stand
for people and communities. With a more sustainable home life,
people want healthy, sustainable food. That’s why it’s great
we’re announcing this, to take a stand
for happy fish around the world.
